<![CDATA[Education Minister Ehsanul Haque Milon has announced that the government will close every coaching center in the country and bring unregistered kindergartens under a formal registration framework.
"100% coaching centers in the country will remain shut down. The government will bring under registration all coaching centers and the kindergartens that have mushroomed across the country. Coaching centers will no longer be allowed to operate in this country," the minister said during an exchange with journalists at Cumilla Circuit House on Saturday afternoon.

Earlier in the day, the education minister attended a meeting at the Cumilla Shilpakala Academy auditorium as chief guest, where he interacted with center secretaries from the Cumilla Education Board, the Madrasa Education Board, and the Technical Education Board of Cumilla region ahead of SSC and equivalent examinations of 2026.

During the meeting, the minister announced that the installation of CCTV cameras in all educational institutions will be made mandatory. He said the cameras will be used to monitor whether teachers are present in classrooms and conducting lessons on time.

He warned that if cheating is detected at any examination center, the center secretary will be held legally accountable. "Even if cheating materials are found in a washroom of the institution, the head of that institution will have to answer for it," he said.

The minister further cautioned that anyone found assisting in cheating from outside the examination center will also face legal action. "No one will be allowed to cheat, and no one will be allowed to facilitate cheating," he stated firmly.

Terming the Ministry of Education a "place of worship" he declared that no form of corruption or dishonesty can be tolerated.

Addressing teachers, he emphasized that sincere efforts in educating students would be considered a form of "Sadaqah Jariyah" (ongoing charity).

The minister urged all stakeholders to treat education as a sacred responsibility and maintain integrity in the system.

Expressing confidence in teachers, the minister said they have always been protected and will continue to receive support in the future.

He, however, warned that any irregularities in the education sector would not be tolerated.

Dr Milon also noted that financial assistance had been provided in the past to teachers injured while performing their duties.

"Education is not like other sectors; it is the main driver of nation-building. There is no alternative to responsibility here," he added, reiterating the government's firm position against cheating in examinations.

He further mentioned that in the past, decisions were made not to immediately penalize institutions even if their pass rate dropped to zero, allowing them an opportunity to improve.

The meeting was attended by center secretaries from the Cumilla Education Board, Madrasa Education Board, and Technical Education Board, among others.

Speakers at the event underscored the importance of collective efforts to ensure that the SSC and equivalent examinations are conducted smoothly, transparently, and without malpractice.

<![CDATA[The government is set to establish a modern and fully equipped school for children with special needs in Dhaka, aiming to ease the acute shortage of quality education and therapy services for children with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD) and other disabilities in the capital. The new institution — Asha’r Alo School Dhaka (For Children with Special Needs) — will be built under a project taken by the Ministry of Social Welfare.

The Department of Social Services (DSS) will implement the project with technical support from the Bangladesh Navy. According to the Development Project Proposal (DPP), the project will run from July 2025 to December 2027 at a cost of Tk 49.56 crore. Of this, Tk 29.73 crore will come from the government and Tk 19.82 crore from the Navy’s own funds. The restructured DPP has been forwarded to the Planning Commission for approval.

Dhaka North City Corporation has 43,846 children with special needs, according to Census 2022 and Social Welfare Ministry data. Yet the area has only 10 specialised schools — meaning nearly 95 percent of children remain without access to appropriate educational or therapeutic support. Against this backdrop, the new school in Joar Sahara, Khilkhet, under DNCC, is expected to significantly expand access in an area where demand drastically outweighs supply.

The project includes the construction of a six-storey foundation with a four-storey functional school building. It will accommodate 300 students, with 30 percent receiving free education. The facility will also provide residential care for five abandoned or orphaned children with special needs.

Designed as a model school, the Dhaka campus will feature Physiotherapy and occupational therapy, Speech and language therapy, Psychotherapy, Hydrotherapy, Sensory parks and recreational areas, Counselling services for parents, Vocational training space, a playground and landscaped outdoor areas.

Officials said the aim is to strengthen both academic and vocational learning so that children with special needs can develop confidence, independence and the skills needed for social integration. The initiative supports the government’s obligations under the Persons with Disabilities’ Rights and Protection Act 2013 and is aligned with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) as part of a larger national and international commitment.

It also fits within the broader goals of the Perspective Plan 2021–2041, which focuses on building an inclusive and equitable society. The Asha’r Alo special education model began in 2003 in Chattogram under the patronage of the Bangladesh Navy. The school quickly earned recognition for its high-quality education, healthcare and vocational training for children with NDDs. A second branch opened in Khulna’s Khalishpur in 2016. Together, they now serve nearly 400 children.

The Navy conducted a needs assessment for Dhaka, which shaped the new DPP. Key components of the project include constructing the non-residential academic building, electrical works, water and sanitation systems, furniture, fixtures, and landscaping. Planning Commission officials said the project has strong justification and could make a ‘meaningful and lasting impact’ on the lives of thousands of special needs children in the capital. More than half of children with disabilities in Bangladesh remain outside the formal education system, according to national data. The information comes from the National Survey on Persons with Disabilities (NSPD) 2021, carried out by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) with UNICEF’s technical assistance.

The survey shows that among children aged 5–17 with disabilities, only 65 per cent attend primary school and just 35 per cent are enrolled in secondary school. Overall, 60 per cent of children with disabilities in this age group are not receiving any education. The study also reveals that even those who do attend school are, on average, more than two years behind academically compared to their peers.

According to the data, 1.7 per cent of Bangladeshi children have at least one of the twelve types of disabilities defined in the Persons with Disability Rights and Protection Act 2013, while 3.6 per cent experience functional difficulties in areas such as seeing, hearing, mobility, fine motor skills, communication, learning, playing or behaviour control.

The protesting teachers said that they are happy with the government decision for now and for this, they withdrew the ongoing movement and will return to classes. However, the teacher leader also said that the government should seriously consider increasing the medical allowance to Tk 1,500 and the festive allowance to 75 per cent for employees.

Earlier, the government had approved a 5 per cent (minimum Tk 2,000) increase in house rent allowance for MPO teachers and staff. The decision was, however, rejected by the teachers and staff who continued their protest demanding a higher increase.

The MPO teachers and staff started staging demonstrations from October 12 to press for three demands, including the house rent hike.

<![CDATA[Finally Education Adviser Professor Dr. Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar has said that the interim government is working on the demands of teachers. Their three key demands are 1. House Rent Allowance @ 20% of the basic salary, 2. Medical Allowance @ Tk1,500 per month and 3. Festival Bonus @ 75% of the basic salary.

"The house rent issue is a sensitive issue. The government is working on this issue. We believe that with the recommendations of the new pay commission, we will be able to ensure a more favorable pay structure next year," the adviser made this hope at a press briefing.

Teachers argue that despite promises reportedly from Education Adviser CR Abrar, these benefits have not been officially gazetted. Many believe the current Tk 500 increase is insufficient and does not match the assurances made. As Masud Parvez, a lecturer in Kurigram, put it, "The government is mocking us. We will not return home until the nationalisation demand is met." Similarly, Habibur Rahman from Rangpur highlighted the disparity faced by educators, "We are the architects of humanity, yet we face discrimination."

The current continuous sit-in follows an ultimatum issued by the alliance on 13 August, demanding the nationalisation of MPO-listed private educational institutions along with increased benefits. Teachers have reportedly been protesting for these benefits since 2011 and are pushing the interim government to translate verbal assurances into official gazettes.

Around 11:30AM on Tuesday, the students with procession went to the Science Lab, halting traffic in one part of that road.

The protesting students alleged that the new ordinance of Dhaka Central University has called for the abolition of the intermediate class of Dhaka College. This will destroy the college's tradition. For this, they have taken to the streets to amend the law.

The dispute has escalated sharply, culminating on Monday morning in a physical altercation between teachers and students at Dhaka College, creating a flashpoint in the controversy. Teachers claimed that they were attacked, while some students have made counter-allegations against them.

BCS general education cadre teachers serving across these seven colleges and nationwide demanding to keep the 7 colleges as it is under the supervision of proposed Dhaka Central University as it was before National University or Dhaka University. Otherwise their posts will be abolished as ex Jagannath College. Some students have also raised concerns over the potential loss of individual college identity, calling for separate University..

The Ministry of Education has said the final administrative and academic framework will incorporate feedback from all stakeholders.

<![CDATA[Allegations surfaced that Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) has occupied the DUCSU cafeteria and is using it as a campaign office without permission from the authorities.

Witnesses said two outsiders were seen inside the cafeteria on Friday afternoon with campaign materials for JCD-backed GS candidate Sheikh Tanvir Bari Hamim.

When questioned by journalists, one identified himself as a visitor from Khulna and the other as a Dhaka College student.

According to election rules, only candidates and voters can join campaigning for the DUCSU and hall union elections and outsiders are strictly prohibited.

DU Proctor Prof Saifuddin Ahmed said, “We have just learned about the matter. A mobile team has been sent to take action against outsiders.”

Inside the cafeteria, JCD’s posters and leaflets were found stored in piles.

Cafeteria director Farzana Basar said, “They did not take any written permission from me. Someone only called me once, saying they would sit there, but they never told me about keeping campaign materials.”

She added that she had tried to contact JCD activists over the matter, but they did not follow up.

A staff member said JCD panel members had been using the room since candidate announcements, but he was unaware whether any official approval had been taken.

Observers fear that allowing one student group to use the cafeteria could raise questions about neutrality in the election.

Chief Returning Officer Prof Dr Mohammad Jasim Uddin said, “This is for the authorities to handle. We just learned about it from you. We can only act on matters within the election code.”

The written exams under general and madrasah boards will continue until Aug 10, while practical exams are scheduled from Aug 11 to 28. Under the Technical Board, theoretical exams will end on Jul 17, with practical exams slated from Jul 18 to 24. The number of examinees under the general education boards totals 1,055,398 students from 4,808 institutions. The madrasah board has 86,102 candidates, while 109,611 students are taking vocational and diploma-in-commerce exams under the technical board. Of the candidates taking the exams, 618,015 are boys and 633,096 are girls. The total number of candidates sitting for the HSC and equivalent examinations is 81,882 fewer than last year.

In light of increasing dengue infections and lingering COVID-19 risks, the Inter-Education Board Coordination Committee has issued a set of health and safety instructions. Masks have been made mandatory for entry to exam centres, and hand sanitiser must be available at all entrances.Local administrations have been instructed to spray mosquito repellents in and around centres prior to exams. Seating arrangements must ensure at least three feet of distance between candidates, and all centres are required to keep medical teams on standby. Authorities have also discouraged gatherings of guardians near centres to maintain safety protocols.

To ensure fair conduct, the education ministry has ordered all coaching centres shut from Jun 20 to Aug 15. The use of mobile phones and electronic devices within 200 yards of exam venues is strictly prohibited for teachers, students and staff. A recent government meeting, chaired by Education Advisor CR Abrar, also authorised legal action against those spreading rumours or leaking exam questions.

Law-enforcing agencies, including the Army if necessary, will be deployed to ensure a smooth and secure examination process. Students are required to enter centres at least 30 minutes before exams begin. Late arrivals must be recorded, with reasons noted. If exams are delayed due to natural causes, lost time will be compensated. Educational institutions serving as exam centres will remain closed on exam days but may resume classes on off days during the exam period.
