BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will be transferred to London for advanced treatment only after doctors confirm she is stable enough for air travel, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Friday. “Khaleda Zia is in a serious condition. If doctors confirm she can travel, she will be taken to London for advanced medical care. Doctors believe that once the air ambulance arrives from Qatar on Saturday, it may be possible to take her to London on Sunday,” he told reporters in Naya Paltan after Jumma prayers.
Earlier, special prayers were offered at a nearby mosque seeking her recovery. Mirza Fakhrul said doctors; both local and international specialists, have been making every effort to stabilise Khaleda Zia, who has been hospitalised for the past week. While she is receiving high-level care, the medical team believes she requires treatment at a more advanced facility abroad, prompting the decision to transfer her to a hospital in the UK.
He alleged that the previous Awami League government kept Khaleda Zia imprisoned for six years, including two years in an old, isolated prison, which many believe marked the onset of her health complications. Her condition deteriorated further due to inadequate treatment, he said, adding that she had been critically ill for much of the past four years. Her air transfer, initially planned for Thursday, was delayed after her condition worsened and an air ambulance could not be arranged in time. “It is not just an issue with the aircraft; her health condition also deteriorated yesterday,” Mirza Fakhrul said.
He appealed to the nation to pray for the BNP chairperson’s recovery.
