Students from different colleges have staged a blockade at three points in Dhaka’s Tatibazar, Mohakhali and Technical intersections pressing for the immediate issuance of a final ordinance to establish the proposed Dhaka Central University. Around 12pm on Wednesday, students of Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College and Kabi Nazrul Government College blocked the Tantibazar intersection. At the same time, students of Mirpur Government Bangla College blocked the Technical intersection and students of Titumir College blocked the Amtoli, Mohakhali intersection.
The education ministry released the draft ordinance on Sept 24. It proposes dividing the seven colleges into four schools under an interdisciplinary or “schooling” framework. The colleges would continue offering higher secondary education under the proposal.
Plans are under way to form Dhaka Central University by combining Dhaka College, Eden Mohila College, Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College, Kabi Nazrul Government College, Begum Badrunnesa Government Girl’s College, Mirpur Government Bangla College and Government Titumir College. However, teachers and sections of the colleges’ student bodies remain divided over how the new institution should be structured.
Due to the road blockade, traffic congestion has occurred in all these areas, causing increased public suffering.
