Chattogram Divisional Conference of National Nikah Registrar Unity Alliance Held

Chattogram, Bangladesh — August 22, 2026: The Chattogram divisional conference of the National Nikah Registrar Unity Alliance, an umbrella platform comprising the Bangladesh Kazi Association, Muslim Nikah Registrar Welfare Council, Bangladesh Union Nikah Registrar Welfare Association and Bangladesh Muslim Nikah Registrar Forum, was held on Saturday at the Chattogram Zila Parishad Auditorium.

Speakers at the conference said that, if necessary, a larger movement would be organised in Dhaka to protect the jurisdictional rights of Nikah Registrars across the country. They also alleged that certain vested-interest groups were attempting to create misunderstanding and distance between the government, Islamic scholars and the Kazi community.

The programme was conducted by Maulana Kazi Mohiuddin Sadek and presided over by Syed Muhammad Abu Sayeed, Joint Convener of the National Nikah Registrar Unity Alliance and President of the Bangladesh Muslim Nikah Registrar Forum.

The chief guest was Kazi Dr. A.S.M. Kader Kibria, Convener of the National Nikah Registrar Unity Alliance, President of the Bangladesh Kazi Association and Joint Convener of Pallabi Thana BNP.

The keynote speaker was Kazi Sabbir, spokesperson of the alliance and President of the Muslim Nikah Registrar Welfare Council. Kazi Mozammel Hossain, President of the Bangladesh Union Nikah Registrar Welfare Association and Member Secretary of the alliance, attended as a special discussant.

Among those who addressed the gathering were Kazi Hafiz Ahmad Morshed, Kazi Md. Abu Taher, Kazi Maulana Abdur Rahman, Kazi Mahmudul Hasan Fuad, Kazi Abul Bashar, Kazi Mufti Shaker Ahmad and Advocate Kazi Sharif Uddin Khandaker, along with Nikah Registrars from different districts, upazilas, police station areas and unions of the Chattogram Division.

During the conference, leaders raised concerns over the jurisdiction and professional security of Nikah Registrars.

They alleged that during the previous Awami League government, Nikah Registrars in different parts of the country faced various forms of harassment. According to the speakers, in some cases existing union jurisdictions were divided and additional Nikah Registrars were appointed to the same areas following recommendations and lobbying linked to influential political figures.

The speakers claimed that such decisions reduced the income of existing Nikah Registrars and created severe financial difficulties for some of those affected.

They further said that a number of cases concerning the jurisdiction of Nikah Registrars remain pending before the High Court, contributing to continued uncertainty and hardship for members of the profession.

Alliance leaders also alleged that attempts were still being made to reduce or alter the jurisdiction of existing Nikah Registrars, which they said could create dissatisfaction among Kazis and Islamic scholars and generate unnecessary tensions with the government.

The speakers expressed hope that the current administration would take the concerns of Nikah Registrars into consideration and would avoid measures that could negatively affect their established jurisdictions and livelihoods.

Senior leaders of the Kazi community called for a fair and transparent approach to jurisdiction-related decisions and urged the authorities to protect the professional rights and financial security of Nikah Registrars throughout Bangladesh.Pressrelease.
