Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus will deliver the long-awaited July Declaration at 5 PM on Tuesday at the South Plaza of Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament), according to Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder.
The event, to be broadcast live on Bangladesh Television, comes on the first anniversary of the July Uprising, which toppled the country’s 16-year authoritarian regime and marked a turning point in Bangladesh’s political history. In a message issued Monday to mark July Uprising Day, Prof Yunus reaffirmed the interim government’s commitment to restoring power to the people through a peaceful, fair and transparent election. He described July as the month that rekindled the nation’s hope for a just, equal and corruption-free Bangladesh.
“The sacrifice of thousands has gifted us this rare opportunity for national reform—and we must protect it at any cost,” the Chief Adviser said. He also warned that "fallen autocrats and their self-serving allies remain active, conspiring to derail the nation’s progress," and called on citizens to stand united beyond divisions to confront and defeat these threats.
Calling August 5 “an unforgettable chapter” in the nation’s history, Prof Yunus paid tribute to the youth, workers, labourers and professionals who gave their lives during the uprising. “My profound respect goes to every martyr of the uprising. The nation shall forever honour their sacrifice,” he said. He also acknowledged those who were injured, permanently disabled or lost their eyesight in the struggle.
The Chief Adviser noted that the July Uprising was a collective eruption against 16 years of oppressive authoritarian misrule, aimed at establishing a new system free from discrimination, corruption and tyranny.
Since taking office, the interim government has rolled out extensive reforms across all state sectors and is overseeing the swift progress of trials related to the July killings, as well as efforts to rehabilitate injured July fighters and preserve the memory of the martyrs.
“To accelerate our democratic journey, dialogue continues with political parties and stakeholders on necessary reforms, including the political and electoral systems,” he added. The July Declaration is expected to outline a national roadmap for reform, reconciliation, and the country’s return to a democratic constitutional order.
