Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has extended warm greetings to the Hindu community on the occasion of Sharadiya Durga Puja, the largest religious festival of the Bangalee Hindu community, set to begin on September 28. In a statement issued by the party’s central publicity division on Sunday, Dr. Rahman conveyed greetings on behalf of himself and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.
The Jamaat chief urged the administration and law enforcement agencies to ensure adequate security so that the Hindu community can celebrate Durga Puja peacefully and without disruption. He also called upon Jamaat workers and all peace-loving citizens to provide full cooperation for the smooth celebration of the festival.
Highlighting Bangladesh’s longstanding tradition of communal harmony, Dr. Rahman said people from all faiths—including Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, and Christians—have observed their respective religious practices in a festive and peaceful manner for generations. He noted that this precedent of coexistence is rare globally and has often drawn praise from international organizations and foreign dignitaries.
Citing past remarks by former Australian High Commissioner Greg Wilcock and EU delegation head William Hanna, Dr. Rahman said Bangladesh has been recognized internationally as a “Moderate Muslim Country” and a “role model of communal harmony.” He added that the country’s religious festivals often become a platform for people of all walks of life to come together, which strengthens tolerance, unity, and respect among communities.
Concluding his message, Dr. Rahman wished happiness, peace, and prosperity for the Hindu community and all ethnic groups in Bangladesh. He emphasized the importance of preserving the nation’s tradition of mutual love, tolerance, and respect as a cornerstone of its cultural identity.
