The Directorate of Primary Education has revoked its earlier order to take disciplinary action against government primary school teachers who staged a work stoppage during the third-term assessments last year.
The directorate issued a new letter on Sunday night cancelling the previous directive that had instructed district primary education officers to initiate departmental proceedings against the teachers involved in the strike.
The revised order, signed by AK Mohammad Shamsul Ahsan, Director of Policy and Operations at the directorate, has been sent to all district primary education officers. Copies have also been forwarded to divisional deputy directors and the office of the Director General for information.
The move effectively means that teachers who left classrooms and examinations to join the protest movement will no longer face any punitive measures.
The issue dates back to late last year when assistant teachers at approximately 65,000 government primary schools across the country observed a work stoppage from November 27 to December 3 in support of a three-point charter of demands.
The strike disrupted annual examinations for students during that period, prompting the authorities to issue the now-cancelled disciplinary directive.
