Chief Whip of Parliament Md Nurul Islam has launched the excavation of Kroke Canal in Barguna as part of a countrywide programme to dredge and restore rivers, canals and water bodies.
The initiative forms part of the government's wider strategy to boost environmental protection and strengthen climate resilience nationwide, according to a press release.
The inauguration was attended by Md Oli Ullah, a Member of Parliament from Islami Andolon Bangladesh, alongside local public representatives, political leaders and residents.
Officials said the programme reflects a key electoral pledge of the current government led by Tarique Rahman, Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, who committed to large scale excavation and restoration of water bodies across the country.
The project is expected to enhance water flow, reduce waterlogging and support sustainable environmental management in climate vulnerable areas like Barguna.
