Today marks the 77th founding anniversary of the Awami League (AL), whose political activities are banned and party chief is in exile.
The party was established on June 23, 1949, as Awami Muslim League at Rose Garden in the capital's old part.
At the time of its establishment, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was in jail and he was made joint general secretary of the party then.
At the party's first council session, Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani was elected president and Shamsul Haque was elected general secretary.
