Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said that the opposition party is non cooperative with the government on constitutional amendments to implement the July Charter, urging it to work in the interest of the country’s 180 million people. “National expectations cannot be fulfilled without upholding the spirit of July. Implementing the July Charter requires both legal and constitutional processes. This will necessitate amendments to the Constitution,” he said.
The minister alleged that the opposition was not cooperating with the government on the issue, adding that it could have considered the initiative a process of constitutional reform.
“The opposition leader has said they will not cooperate with the government. However, we want them to cooperate with the 180 million people of the country,” Salahuddin said.
He made the remarks on Monday morning while speaking as a special guest at the inauguration of the July Memorial at Osmani Udyan in the capital.
Describing the unveiling of the memorial plaque as a source of national inspiration, the home minister said the July uprising had not taken place overnight.
“We had to sustain a continuous movement from 2009 to 2024 to bring about the July mass uprising. Therefore, its memory must remain alive in our national life,” he said.
He also stressed the importance of reflecting the spirit of July in the country’s theatre, arts and cultural activities in the future.
Salahuddin Ahmed said the government was committed to implementing the spirit of the July uprising and that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman was working towards that goal.
