District Correspondent, Khulna: Khulna BNP leaders have demanded the immediate removal of Khulna Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md. Zulfikar Ali Haider, giving him 24 hours to step down. The demand comes after Sub-Inspector Sukanta Das was reportedly released at night on the orders of KMP Commissioner Md. Zulfikar Ali Haider. Sukanta, who was handed over to Khan Jahan Ali police following public apprehension of alleged wrongdoing, was recently charged in four FIRs, including the vandalism of BNP president Advocate Shafiqul Alam Mona’s home.
He also faces numerous allegations related to abuses carried out under the former government. In an official statement issued by BNP media cell on Wednesday, senior party figures condemned the release, saying the commissioner not only failed in his duty but appeared to align with “fallen government.” They demanded that the commissioner be removed from Khulna within 24 hours. They also called for the dismissal of any other officials involved, urging disciplinary action against all responsible parties.
The statement further criticized the commissioner’s performance since the July student-led protests. “He has been utterly unsuccessful in apprehending notorious criminals in Khulna. The city’s law and order has deteriorated severely under his watch. With daily incidents of killings and violence, Khulna can never be kept safe under such failed leadership,” the BNP assertion read. Addressing SI Sukanta’s alleged violence during the student uprising between July and August, the statement described his release as a blatant abuse of the law and demonstrative of police partiality.
The leaders warned that if the commissioner is not removed within the next 24 hours, they will take to the streets with the people of Khulna.
The signatories of the statement include Rokibul Islam Bakul, Student Affairs Secretary, BNP National Executive Committee; Azizul Bari Helal, Information Secretary of central BNP; Advocate Shafiqul Alam Mona, President of Khulna Metropolitan BNP; Moniruzzaman Montu, Convener, Khulna District BNP; Shafiqul Alam Tuhin, General Secretary of Khulna Metropolitan BNP; Advocate Momerazul Islam, Senior Joint Convener of Khulna District BNP; Sheikh Saadi, Organizational Secretary of Khulna Metropolitan BNP; Masud Parvez Babu; Chowdhury Hasanur Rashid Miraz, among others.
They concluded the statement with a firm warning; “If the commissioner is not removed, we, along with the people of Khulna, will take protest to the streets.”
