7 College issue: Science Lab blocked

Staff Reporter

HSC - Intermediate students of Dhaka College have taken position on the Science Lab intersection protesting the incident of scuffle between the students and the teachers of the institution. Around 11:30AM on Tuesday, the students with procession went to the Science Lab, halting traffic in one part of that road.

The protesting students alleged that the new ordinance of Dhaka Central University has called for the abolition of the intermediate class of Dhaka College. This will destroy the college's tradition. For this, they have taken to the streets to amend the law.

The dispute has escalated sharply, culminating on Monday morning in a physical altercation between teachers and students at Dhaka College, creating a flashpoint in the controversy. Teachers claimed that they were attacked, while some students have made counter-allegations against them.

BCS general education cadre teachers serving across these seven colleges and nationwide demanding to keep the 7 colleges as it is under the supervision of proposed Dhaka Central University as it was before National University or Dhaka University. Otherwise their posts will be abolished as ex Jagannath College. Some students have also raised concerns over the potential loss of individual college identity, calling for separate University..

The Ministry of Education has said the final administrative and academic framework will incorporate feedback from all stakeholders.
