Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin has said that tackling the misuse of artificial intelligence and digital platforms during elections remains a major challenge for the Election Commission.
He made the remarks while briefing representatives of political parties at EC auditorium in Agargaon.
The CEC expressed concern over the spread of misinformation and confusion on social media regarding the commission’s newly introduced IT-supported postal voting system for non-resident Bangladeshis.
“This initiative covers Bangladeshis living in 122 countries. If implemented successfully, it will place Bangladesh on the global electoral map,” Nasir Uddin said.
He added that the commission was aware of the challenges involved and was determined to ensure the programme’s success despite variations in laws, postal systems and cultures across different countries.
Urging the media to play a constructive role, the CEC said much of the criticism circulating on social media stems from misunderstanding rather than ill intent.
“Many developed countries have struggled to include overseas citizens in voting. For a first-time initiative, Bangladesh is already ahead in terms of progress,” he said.
The briefing was attended by Election Commissioners Abdur Rahmanel Masud, Tahmida Ahmed, Anwarul Islam Sarkar and Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah, as well as EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed.
